Wall Street Journal Busts
Harvard Researcher Tied to Shaklee ‘Anti-Aging Tonic’
WatchDog Editors Note: Yes I take Resveratrol (no not Vivix) and believe that the Wall Street Journal (WSJ)in time may be proved responsible for the loss of 100’s of 1000’s years from people’s lives. Resveratrol needs to be promoted not banged. Our regrets to both parties in this story! What I am amazed about is Shaklee’s SLOW compliance to get shaky and illegal claims off the Internet. This is the second day after this WSJ article broke and there are still shaky and illegal claims on the first sets of Google pages. If the FDA read Friday’s Wall Street Journal they can shut down Shaklee by doing some Google searches. Their Compliance Dept. taking a holiday while the company is at risk!
A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) writer says, “this deal caught our eye because David Sinclair, a Harvard researcher who’s done some high-profile aging research, was paid to be on the scientific board of, the supplement company that sells Vivix.” The WSJ continued to pound both Shaklee and Dr. Sinclair (see links below) for taking a paid position on their advisory board.
Shaklee’s Vivix (and now more MLM Companies) contains a compound called resveratrol. Sinclair’s research suggests that resveratrol may slow aging. Sinclair received $8 million when Sirtris, a company (he helped found) based on Resveratrol related drugs, was sold to GlaxoSmithKline. Sinclair still remains a consultant to Sirtris.
Dr. Sinclair said he resigned because of Shaklee Distributor misrepresentations on the Internet such as this borderline legal one the WatchDog quickly found that says, “We are most excited about Shaklee's new cellular anti-aging product that goes INTO the cell and repairs it. The discoverer of Resveratrol, Dr. David Sinclair, (seen on Barbara Walter's Show, "Can you Live to be 150?") contacted Shaklee to collaborate with him to develop Vivix, based on his research. My clients with MS, Arthritis, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes and Fibromyalgia are all seeing very exciting results. Healthy people are benefiting too. I'd love to send you their testimonials! The tag line for Vivix is, "Want to Live 25 Years Longer? Feel 25 Years Younger?" As you go deep into Google illegal claims are there. If I were running Shaklee the Compliance Dept. would be on their computers - Google and telephones 24/7!
Dr. Sinclair said, “I have engaged counsel to deal with this matter and have demanded that Shaklee cease using my name.” Shaklee says, “every implied product endorsement was in Dr. Sinclair’s own words and every Shaklee use of his name — whether in print or video — was pre-approved by him in keeping with our agreement.”
Editors Note: A serious consideration for all researchers is conflict with government money provided for research. Dr. David Sinclair has an NIH grant to investigate the role of Resveratrol in aging. Most serious academic researchers know that Senator Charles Grassley has jumped all over researchers who get federal money while at the same time they have financial connections to companies that stand to profit from funded research. I would guess he is laying low because of this.
A LOOK AT SHAKLEE'S NUMBERS
WatchDog PURE Editorial:
Ur Editor: I was shocked at first when I saw that Shaklees numbers didn't stay up after the introduction of Vivix the Resveratrol product. These are web numbers from a "sniffer" showing traffic to Shaklee's website. The spike the first of the year shows the introduction of Vivix resveratrol and the excitement created. Then visits drop in January 2008. Your MLM WatchDog editor is of the opinion there were two reasons for this:
1. The price point for Shaklee's Vivix was too high with $85 wholesale and $100 for retail. The Resveratrol from Sirtris is too expensive and Shaklee passed up a chance to get Resveratrol at lesser cost.
2. I love the old Stair - Step Breakaway complan, but it is just not market competitive today. Thinking on the subject Shaklee should have done a Divisional Diversification when they took off with the Resveratrol product.
3. These are subjective opinions but time has proved that Rod Cook UR Editor runs 99.99% correct on written material over the last 20 years!
Caution: these are NOT numbers to count for sales exactly they indicate interest and visitors to a website, but they are is a good "guesstimate for how "hot" a company is! the 34% drop in traffic since Nov 2007 is certainly indicative of a drop in interest if nothing else
