NEW UPDATE!  WE WERE RIGHT BERYL J. WOLK DID NOT SAY ALL THIS!
MAN,  MLM HYPSTERS CAN RUIN OUR WORLD!
Beryl says that he said,  "helped start" companies meaning he did the back end marketing and what happens to Marketers when a company booms??  As you MLMers know, it was the genius of the owners no matter how bad you worked your tush off!
You Ed.  Great Job by Will and Beryl both in creating this study on how a few MLM Hypesters took a few words and took them them out of context into pure blathering drivel. See Ed. Notes in Navy down the page.

HYPE, HYPE AND MORE HYPE WHICH WE ARE SURE MR. WOLK DIDN'T SAY
This document, and all research involved, was produced in a total of 35 minutes after I read yet another spam email promoting Better Universes and the countless websites I have seen thanks to these emails making just some of the claims you will see below.  By Will ThunderBus Intergalactic Reporter 1st Degree

Will Says, "EMAIL SPAM CLAIMS FIRST - THEN BELOW THAT THE HYPE INVESTIGATION & ANALYSIS!
PS – Here is one of the over a 100 spam emails I have received about Better Universes and Beryl Wolk.  All I have done is removed the name of the person who sent this particular email and the contact information."

I have to admit, I became intrigued about Better Universes and Beryl Wolk when a friend of mine introduced me to the company. Before I ever rule out any opportunity, I like to check things out. Part of my research involved looking into the driving force behind the company, Mr. Beryl Wolk.

After all, I want to know who I would be in business with.

Some of the things I’d heard were that he was a multi-billionaire who had achieved so much and started many well known businesses and organizations. So I started my bit of research, and found that a lot of what was being said to back up this man seemed to be out and out lies. Some things I couldn’t verify. Others however, were absolute boldfaced lies and I felt it my responsibility to share what I learned.

Here is a list of some of the claims and what I found out:

Beryl Wolk is a multi-billionaire.  "He is in terms of trade credits"
Take a look at this website. http://www.forbes.com/2005/03/09/bill05land.html.
This is a list of the world’s wealthiest people for 2004 and 2005. The list contains 691 individuals whose wealth exceeds $1 Billion at the time of the survey.

Beryl Wolk’s name doesn’t appear on that list at all. Forbes is a very reputable magazine with worldwide credibility. I can’t imagine Forbes magazine leaving a multi-billionaire marketing guru off the list. One would think they’d get it right.

Beryl Wolk started the AARP.  "Would those left wing biddies admit they used a "marketer."
I’m sure the AARP would like to know this.
According to their website: http://www.aarp.org/leadership/Articles/a2003-01-13-aarphistory.html

”Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired high school principal, founded AARP in 1958. AARP evolved from the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), which Dr. Andrus had established in 1947 to promote her philosophy of productive aging, and in response to the need of retired teachers for health insurance. At that time, private health insurance was virtually unavailable to older Americans; in fact, it was not until 1965 that the government enacted Medicare, which provides health benefits to persons over age 65. Dr. Andrus approached dozens of insurance companies until she found one willing to take the risk of insuring older persons. She then developed other benefits and programs, including a discount mail order pharmacy service.”

I’ll grant you it is possible that Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus is actually Beryl Wolk. I’ll leave you to judge that though. Here is a picture of Dr. Andrus: http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/articles/volunteer/rnav_percyandrus.jpg

Beryl Wolk does marketing for the United Nations "true they are trying to clean up their image"
A fantastic claim. Again there is nothing out there saying that this is true or not. I can’t seem to find any information on that at all.  Beryl’s own website doesn’t make mention of his doing marketing work for the UN.

Beryl Wolk started QVC  "Marketing on back end loaned them trade credits for air time"
Not according to QVC.
http://www.qvc.com/asp/frameset.asp?dd=nav/navhqwel.html&nest=/mainhqwel.html?tmp=hp&cont=mi
“QVC, Inc. was founded in 1986 by Joseph Segel, founder of The Franklin Mint. The company established a new record in American business history for first full-fiscal-year sales by a new public company, with revenues of over $112 million. By 1993, QVC had become the number one televised shopping service in sales, profits, and reputation in the United States, reaching over 80% of all U.S. cable homes and 3 million satellite dishes. In 2003, more than 120 million units were shipped to customers around the world as a result of approximately 180 million phone calls, leading to more than $4.8 billion in sales. QVC is the world's preeminent electronic retailer.”

Beryl Wolk started Home Shopping Network "Marketing on back end loaned them trade credits for air time"
So he started the main competitor to the other company he started, QVC?
Which one is it?
http://www.hsn.com/corp/info/default.aspx?aid=1870
“1977 - By accident, home shopping gets its start on a Clearwater, Florida AM radio station when an advertiser cannot pay his bill. The station owner accepts 112 electric can openers in lieu of cash, which he decides to auction over the air. A complete sellout gives birth to "Suncoast Bargaineers," a regularly scheduled radio show.
1981 - Concept moves to Tampa Bay-area local access cable as "Home Shopping Channel."
1982 - Home Shopping Channel graduates to a regular local Tampa-area cable system and is assigned a permanent channel number.”

Granted I couldn’t find out who owned the radio station that sold the can openers, so I can’t verify that is was or wasn’t Beryl Wolk.

Beryl Wolk started Lifetime Television "Marketing on back end loaned them trade credits for air time"
Another statement that is questionable. Here’s what Lifetime’s website has to say.
http://www.lifetimetv.com/about/index.html

“Launched on February 1, 1984, Lifetime was created by the merger of Daytime and Cable Health Network (CHN). Daytime, operated by Hearst/ABC Video Services, began in March, 1982, as a four-hour per day weekday service featuring alternative programming for women. CHN, operated by Viacom, debuted in June, 1982, as a 24-hour service offering programs on personal and family health, fitness, science and medicine, and became the forerunner for Lifetime Medical Television (LMT) from November 1983 to July 1993.”

I could not find any mention of Beryl Wolk anywhere on Lifetime’s web site.

Beryl Wolk founded the Discovery Channel "Marketing on back end loaned them trade credits for air time"
Let’s see what Discovery has to say on this.
http://corporate.discovery.com/executives/hendricks.html

“John S. Hendricks is the founder and chairman of Discovery Communications, Inc. the leading global real-world media and entertainment company. Hendricks created the Discovery Channel in 1982 as the first cable network in the United States designed to provide high quality documentary programming enabling people to explore their world and satisfy their natural curiosity.”

Once again, there is no mention of Beryl Wolk anywhere in relation to the Discovery Channel or any of its networks.

Beryl Wolk invented the infomercial  "First to make long format profitable which is really a first"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infomercial
“Infomercials proliferated in the United States after 1984 when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) eliminated regulations, which were established in the 1950s and 1960s, on the commercial content of television. Much of their early development can be attributed to business partners Ed Valenti and Barry Beecher who developed the format to sell the Ginsu Knife.”

No credit is given to Beryl Wolk for inventing the infomercial except for what is being said through Better Universes and Beryl Wolk’s own web site which states that “In 1977, we created the 1st long form infomercial and have produced 1,680 infomercials.”
http://www.berylsworld.com/programs.cfm

My thought on that is the following. If the regulations weren’t lifted until 1984, how’d they do it in 1977? Granted, I’m sure he could have come up with the idea, but no one actually credits him for it, except him.

Invented sweepstakes   "First to get them to work"
I tried to look for this information, and again couldn’t find any reference to Beryl Wolk in relation to sweepstakes. However, I couldn’t find any information to disprove the claim.

On that note though, Beryl Wolk’s website says the following:
“We are the world’s largest sweepstakes company with the ability to barter prizes for promotional considerations with over 175 National accounts. We feature “rub-off” and “scrambled “ entries, and provide point of purchase displays.”
http://www.berylsworld.com/programs.cfm

It says nothing about his having invented them. If he did, wouldn’t he say it?

Beryl Wolk invented Newspaper Inserts
Very difficult to find out who actually invented them. However, Beryl Wolk’s website does state “We have pioneered the targeted “ mini-zone “ newspaper insert published under our “Family Guide “ copyright. – Direct response at half the cost! Our inserts are customized for each local dealer, retailer, etc., with 5000-targeted subscribers (minimum) in any city in America.”
http://www.berylsworld.com/programs.cfm
I didn’t see the word invent anywhere in there.

Beryl Wolk owns radio stations  "trade credits for air time = might as well own"
Again, no information on if he really owns any, but his website does say this.
“We have Joint Ventures with Radio Networks on which we can run commercials and 30 Minute shows reaching 180 national markets- 800 stations- 4 times a day on a P.I. Basis.”
http://www.berylsworld.com/programs.cfm

Beryl Wolk did all marketing for Comcast. "Marketing on back end and loaned them trade credits for air time"
As I’m writing this, I am waiting for word back from Comcast as to the truth of this statement. I was struck by this one particularly as I used to work for Comcast and had never heard mention of Beryl Wolk in any relation to the company or its history.

I find it interesting that I didn’t find Beryl Wolk’s name attached to anything major with all my online research. I did find the following article though: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2003_April_7/ai_99723023

The interesting thing there is that the company he joined forces with in April of 2003, changed its name and was in need of being “turned around” by September of the same year.

http://www.national-jeweler.com/nationaljeweler/headlines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1989114
That company today doesn’t seem to exist anymore.

So folks, here’s my conclusion:

I can not and will not say that Beryl Wolk isn’t a good man with a great mind for business. I don’t know, I haven’t met him or spoken with him, and the research I did was inconclusive to say the least.  However, I question the integrity and ethics of those who have to promote something through lies and deceit. And I question the integrity and ethics of any man who would let lies be told about him for the benefit of his own bank balance.

I will update this as necessary and if I am wrong on any of this, I will happily concede the facts once those facts are presented to me in a fashion that I can verify them for myself and for you.

Lastly, for those of you who are out there promoting the Better Universes opportunity, I sincerely hope I am wrong about my conclusions and wish you the best of luck.
